Sycorax is a beautiful story, steeped in sadness, about one of William Shakespeare’s unseen fictional female characters. Sycorax appears as a secondary character in The Tempest, mother of Caliban, and a powerful witch, she is spoken about but never seen.
This book brings Sycorax to life with a detailed look at this wise woman, from her birth into her adulthood when she is banished to the island that will eventually appear in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
From the daughter of one of the village’s two wise women, to the witch, sorceress, and seer that she herself is labelled as by her peers. Nydia Hetherington takes the reader on a sweeping journey through this fictional character’s experiences of being othered as a woman who dares to be different from what is expected of her.
This book is beautiful, and truly heartbreaking. As much as you root for Sycorax to be accepted by the villagers, time and time again, you know deep down the direction her story will go. When she looks to the bees and a crow as friends, you are swept up in the hope that somehow Sycorax will find companionship, only to have your hopes brutally dashed shortly thereafter.
This book beautifully depicts the cruelness of people when they are faced with the unknown. It looks at human nature and a person’s willingness to ostracise another simply because they are perceived as different.
