Queen James is an excellent historical account of the life of James I/VI, with a particular focus on his romantic relationships with six different men.
Russell is extensive in his research, giving background to every single figure who comes up, without the book feeling overwhelmingly academic. It reads more like a novel as the text is surprisingly humorous and paints a remarkably human image of these historic characters.
I loved learning more than I knew it was possible to know about James, but I also really enjoyed reading more about his wife Anna of Denmark, who is showcased for her political know-how and royal significance in a time where men dominated all aspects of society.
I have never enjoyed a historical biography this much, and this is entirely down to Russell's clear yet detailed writing, which makes the book accessible to anyone interested in learning more.
A perfect read for Pride Month and beyond, Russell brings James and his queerness to life in an engaging, heartfelt manner.
