Staff Review

The perfect anthology if you are a fan of YA fiction and are looking to familiarise yourself with the bard. This anthology delves into Shakespeare’s classics, from diverse queer retellings to ambitious rewrites. There is something in this book for everyone. This really is an accessible way to enjoy Shakespeare’s work and may even ignite a passion for reading the original text or seeing a show!

For me, growing up, my first introductions to Shakespeare were classic 90s and 00s films like 10 Things I hate about you and She’s the Man – it is exciting to see more text-based adaptations that you can dip in and out of. A vast improvement to older Shakespeare retellings is the diversity of the characters; I feel that passionately that more young readers will engage with this material because they are able to see themselves in the stories.

The short story structure allows the reader to get a taste of Shakespeare’s work without overwhelming the reader and might suit those who would prefer to snuggle up with a book than attend a busy theatre.
