Is it a Tragedy, or is it a Romance?
Romeo & Juliet is widely regarded as a tragic love story, but more often than not it is idealised in romantic retellings as a love story first and foremost. For our graphic ranges that are inspired by the play, we have focused on the dichotomy of the play, acknowledging both the first love story, but also recognising this as a cautionary tale, a tragedy. Prince himself says so at the end of the play in Act 5, scene 3 when he says, ‘For never was a story of more woe, Than that of Juliet and her Romeo.’
For years we have tried designs relating to both the love story and the tragedy, and today we offer a selection of both styles of design which include some of the most recognisable quotes from the play.
A Plague On Both Your Houses
It may be telling that our most successful graphics relating to Romeo & Juliet are the ‘A Plague On Both Your Houses’ range of clothing and homeware. We lean into the dark and deadly in many of the graphics that we offer and Romeo & Juliet is no exception.
Our plague graphic features a wreath of black, white and shades of grey flowers with various poison bottles popping out from it. All of the poison bottles are in a slightly green tinted shade of grey to accentuate them within the design. The entire graphic is overlayed with bold white text outlined in black quoting ‘A Plague on Both Your Houses,’ which is spoken by Mercutio in Act 3, scene 1 of Romeo & Juliet.
Our plague range has proven so popular that we feature it both in store and online.
Did My Heart Love Till Now?
White graphic text with a bold black outline sit atop an image of red roses, anatomical hearts and graphic hearts all in shades of red. This graphic focuses on the heart and the romance of the quote ‘Did my heart love till now?’ which is spoken by Romeo in Act 1, scene 5 of Romeo & Juliet.
Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow
Featuring a design of pink, white and peach coloured flowers with bold green leaves, this heart-breaking quote highlights the clear feelings of loss that our young lovers feel whenever they are separated from one another. Featuring the quote ‘Parting is such sweet sorrow’ which is spoken by Juliet in Act 2, scene 2 of Romeo & Juliet, plays on the all-consuming feelings of love which are felt by the young lovers.
Romeo & Juliet Quotes
This playful graphic features graphic text and cutesy stars, hearts, and even a poison bottle, all depicted in an olive green shade. The graphic text changes across the design, with specific words highlighted within each quote to draw the viewer to them.
