Set in the fictional San-Er, Immortal Longings tells the story of Princess Calla Tuoleimi and Anton Makusa as they both enter the annual games held in San-Er. A brutal fight to the death, 88 competitors volunteer to compete for their chance at wealth and financial security in a kingdom where most struggle to scrape by day to day.
Calla enters the games on a mission to tear down San-Er's tyrannical monarchy, while Anton has entered in a bid to save his love with the winnings. Both Calla and Anton are talented jumpers, in a world where it is frowned upon to inhabit another's body, but a games that encourages the chaos and violence that this can create giving them a natural advantage over the other competitors.
Gong's mastery of world building is evident in this retelling. The world that she describes is vivid and immersive, making every action that the main characters take more real for the reader. San-Er is claustrophobic and messy and the perfect setting for a battle to the death.
Calla and Anton's chemistry is electric and undeniable and it is easy to get lost in their love story. I couldn't put this book down and will now have to read Vilest Things to find out how the story ends!
